Since FIFA or FIFPro can't quite work out that not all the players have to come from La Liga with the odd addition of a player from the treble winning side, I have decided I will give you the joy of reading about some more well thought awards.
Team of the Year
Despite me thinking about this more than FIFA, there is sure to be dispite to my choices. Whoever did it this will happen, so if you disagree, instead of abusing me, please tell me why you think it's wrong and who should replace them.
GK - Manuel Neuer
There are others who can just about challenge big Manuel, but really he was superb in 2013. I don't need to talk too much about him, he seems to have improved further since 2012 and I really can't see anyone else but him being the best keeper in the World for the next 2 years, when keepers like De Gea, Courtois and Ter Stegen reach the start of their peak. Mind you, Courtois was very close for me.
RB - Phillip Lahm
Captained Bayern Munich to the treble. Again don't need to say much more, the man is a genius.
CB - Thiago Silva
Not many defenders make me say 'he is the rock at the back'. Over the last 5 years or so I can think of Carles Puyol, Nemanja Vidic and a few others. I try to be restrained with it, as I feel it is a phrase of admiration. For Thiago Silva, in 2013, he was the rock at the back, and the best central defender in the World. No doubt about it.
CB - Dante
There is a worrying tone so far that 3 of the first 4 players have been from Bayern Munich. Dante really impressed me in 2013, he has a calm but confident way of playing. Similar to a Rio Ferdinand during his peak period of his career, Dante plays the ball out of defence well, and although you could argue it's not hard when you're playing with the best players in the world, at Bayern, he still has a remarkable talent.
LB - David Alaba
Yes, another Bayern player, but once more they deserve it. The only player who comes anywhere near to Alaba, is Everton's Leighton Baines, but even so, Alaba wins by a country mile. He is the perfect left back, slick attacker, solid defender.
RW - Franck Ribery
Part of the treble winning side, and absolutely amazing to watch, no matter the game. Nominated for the Balon D'or and completely deserves it. Unbelievable player.
CM - Bastian Schweinsteiger
Oh my, Bastian Schweinsteiger is a footballing genius. He controls the midfield better than anyone else in the World.
CM - Arturo Vidal
Along with Schweinsteiger, Arturo Vidal is the best in the World at controlling the midfield. Despite controversy surrounding him every so often, he continues to amaze me with how much he's improved since 2012. He's not only improved, he has become on the best players in the World and pairing him alongside Schweinsteiger would be a dream come true to watch.
LW - Cristiano Ronaldo
He's a genius.
CAM - Gareth Bale
He carried Tottenham to fifth and although it was a disappointment not to finish in the top four, they over achieved and it was all down to this man, Gareth Bale. He played left, right and centre and the man is truly brilliant. Exciting, unpredictable, young, fan favourite, all the things you require when you move abroad as a Brit and despite the huge pressure on him, he's managed to do well in Spain, after moving to Real Madrid for a World Record fee. An impressive feat.
CF - Lionel Messi
You were getting scared I wasn't including the master, the magician, possibly the greatest player to have graced the Earth, Lionel Messi. Oh no, I had to include him. Despite him not having his best year, he was still brilliant and deserved his nomination for the Balon D'or.
Imagine that team, it would be unstoppable. Who's my Player of the Year though?
Player of the Year - Cristiano Ronaldo
As a Manchester United fan I could be accused of being biased towards Ronaldo but many will agree that the Portuguese has been the best player of 2013. He scored left, right and centre and assisted from left, right and centre. He's partnered up with Gareth Bale perfectly, without a fuss and what more can I say? He's the most complete player I have ever seen and just keeps getting better. He netted his 400th career goal a few weeks ago. Lionel Messi has been fantastic and I love the man, well I love watching the man more so but the point remains, despite his brilliance, Ronaldo netted 66 times in 56 games for club and country and that is beyod ridiculous.
Manager of the Year - Jupp Heynckes
There is no question to who gets my manager/coach of the year award. Jupp Heynckes guided all the players who featured in my Team of the Year to Bundesliga, Champions League and DFB Pokal glory. His achievements during 2013 were astounding to witness. (For now) he is in retirement but I for one would like to see him come out of retirement, as I did with Paul Scholes. Like Scholes, he is one of those figures in football that everyone admires and lets hope we see him again soon.
For now, that are the only awards I'm doing but I would also like to pay tribute to some legends in the game who died in 2013 and in the opening days of 2014.
RIP
Brian Greehoff - Remembered for his excellence during his Manchester United days.
Nilton Santos - Remembered for his part in the 1958 Brazil World Cup Winning side. One of the greatest left-backs to grace the earth.
Bill Foukes - One of Manchester United's best ever players, and that is no exaggeration. One of the Busby Babes his work ethic was matched by none outside of the United team of that era. The remarkable thing about Foulkes is he thought he wasn't going to make it as a footballer, so when he began playing at United, he got a job as a coal miner. He was a key member of the Busby Babes in defence. He played 688 times for United.
Djalma Santos - Remembered for winning two World Cups. Santos is one of only two players to be included in 3 FIFA World Cup All Stars. He was solid in defensive and although he very rarely attacked, he had the talent to and every time he did attack, they were top quality. He played over 400 times for Portuguesa and almost 500 times for Palmerias. While making 98 appearances along with over 950 Club appearances, he was never sent off. The olden day version of Ryan Giggs.
Dave Hickson - Liverpudlians will know all about Hickson. He is one of only three players to feature in all three Meryseyside clubs, Liverpool, Everton and Tranmere. He is remembered by Everton fans for coming back after injury in the second half against Manchester United to score with a huge hash above his eye, in 1953.
Christian Benitez - One of the most tragic footballing deaths of the year. 'Chucho' has had his Number 11 Ecuador jersey retired in honour of him.
Eusebio - When I woke up to the news that Eusebio had passed away, despite being young in footballing terms, I was shocked. He played over 30 years before I was born but I still knew about him. That was the power of the man. His personality and quality, off and on the pitch, made him one of the most liked footballers ever and the tributes flew in on the morning he passed away. You can find my tribute to him on the features section of this site.
